  2. doctor. He entered Parliament 1966, and was
  3. Labour foreign secretary 1977-79. In 1981 he
  4. was one of the founders of the Social
  5. Democratic Party (SDP), and in 1983 became
  6. its leader. Opposed to the decision of the
  7. majority of the party to merge with the
  8. Liberals 1987, Owen stood down, but emerged
  9. 1988 as leader of a rump SDP, which was
  10. eventually disbanded 1990.
